Avon Lake
Insurance Rates Skyrocket For Steingass’s Former Client, City Of Avon Lake

The City of Avon Lake had hired Steingass to do plumbing and fire protection work on their Courthouse and Safety Center. However, when a Steingass-installed fire protection sprinkler burst, flooding the judge’s chambers with 300 gallons of water per minute, left the court room floors under three inches of water, destroyed court records, carpeting and law books, the City of Avon Lake was sure to be drenched with higher insurance costs.

After Avon Lake filed a $150,000 damages claim with their insurer, Guaranty National, over the water damage, Guaranty responded by raising their rates 80 percent.

DISCRIMINATION
Steingass Must Pay $20,000 To Its Employees To Settle Discrimination Suit

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has found reasonable cause that Steingass Mechanical discriminated against 36 persons who were fired, demoted or refused jobs. The NLRB has ordered over $20,000 in payments to the wronged workers, according to a December 21, 2002 published account in The Plain Dealer.

WAGE VIOLATIONS
State Of Ohio Investigates Steingass For Multiple Wage Violations
In the following instances, the State of Ohio is investigating whether Steingass Mechanical Contracting violated State law that regulates wage payments to its workers. If the complaint is finalized, Steingass will be required to shell out back pay to its employees, possibly in the amounts of thousands of dollars. Recently, the State of Ohio has required Steingass to pay over $100,000 to its short-changed workers in similar cases.

In The Previous Issue...
In the previous issue of The Contrac-tors Critic, LASER published a news flash suggesting that Steingass may have been involved in a fire at a nursing home in Navarre, Ohio. The fire was caused when a backhoe struck a gas line.

However, after further investigation, LASER discovered that in this particular case, Steingass was not involved. The backhoe was being operated by an employee of another company.
