Overview
A glimpse into the business dealings of Lee Mechanical Contractors, Inc. reveals much. Nearly all of it is good for the owners, Brenda and Ernie Gibson, although a lot of it may not be so good for the company’s employees, subcontractors and customers.

Lee Mechanical is a "domestic limited liability" business entity incorporated April 29, 1985 in the state of Missouri. Its principals are listed as Brenda L. Gibson, president, and Ernest L. Gibson, vice president.

The main office is located at 4973 Flat River Road, Farmington in St. Francois County about 65 miles south of St. Louis, according to the latest documents filed with the Secretary of State, Matt Blunt.

Claiming $25 million annual sales as of Jan. 4, 2002, some 180 to 200 employees and a mailing address of P.O. Box 663 Park Hills, 63601, Lee Mechanical is ranked as a "major employer" in the Park Hills area, with Ernie Gibson listed as the owner.

A report compiled by Dun and Bradstreet, credits Brenda Gibson as being not only the company’s president, but also with running the marketing, financial and personnel-benefits aspects of the business. Besides being vice president, Ernie Gibson — he prefers to be called "Ernie" — is also the company’s chief executive officer, treasurer and purchasing officer, D&B reported.

Office and operations manager Gina Kearns was the only other significant figure D&B listed in the day-to-day operations of Lee Mechanical.

In short, Lee Mechanical Contractors, Inc. is a closely held corporation with critical decision-making powers vested in very few people, all of them at the pinnacle of management. That means responsibility rests squarely with the folks at the top.

Lee Mechanical’s Business Philosophy
Lee Mechanical describes itself as a mechanical contractor specializing in plumbing, heating and air-conditioning, plus related electrical and computer services.

"Lee Mechanical offers highly competitive pricing," because it has the "competitive edge of a Merit-Shop," the firm trumpets at its Internet website, http://www.leemechanical.com. Translated from marketing parlance into everyday English the message is clear — they submit low-ball bids, pay employees below prevailing wages and fringe benefits, with little supervising oversight.

Mr. Gibson has been on the board of directors of the Heart of America Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., a corporate service group brought together — by its own description — to promote anti-worker goals.
