C & R Plumbing had a contract with the Spokane Arena, and part of their duties were to train City workers in how to conduct facility maintenance. During one such training session, a C & R Employee placed a ladder against a wall in the Veterans Memorial Arena. The City Maintenance chief, Gary Horsman, was then directed by C & R Plumbing to climb the ladder. C & R had installed the ladder on a slippery floor, without using top hooks, a spotter, or other safety features. Horsman and the ladder fell. Horsman suffered severe, disabling, and permanent injuries. Horsman sued C & R and others in September, 1988.
AN UNLICENSED C & R WORKER CAUSED A NATURAL GAS EXPLOSION AND FIRE A C & R worker was removing a natural gas valve at the Coeur d’Alene Resort even though he was not licensed or supervised for such work. A pool heater ignited the gas, causing a fire and explosion. One worker was injured. GILBANE BUILDING COMPANY, A LARGE GENERAL CONTRACTOR STATED IN WRITING THAT C & R IS NOT A QUALIFIED CONTRACTOR Inside the close-knit construction industry, few contractors are willing to blow the whistle on one another. This is because you never know who is going to be supervising the next job, and if you speak against one contractor, he may provide evidence against you soon. That is why it is so rare to find correspondence like the May, 1999 letter that Gilbane Building Company sent to C & R Plumbing, regarding C&R’s desire to bid on work at the Washington State University Recreation Center Project.
