Buckeye Electric Company’s Long History of Wage and Hour
Violations | | | |
Time and again, the
State of Ohio has caught Buckeye Electric underpaying its own employees on
government jobs. One case was so serious that the State of Ohio even filed
criminal charges against Buckeye Electric for its violations. Given this
history, one would think that Buckeye would be extra careful to obey the wage
laws, yet that is not so. As recently as December 2000, the Ohio Department of
Commerce - Division of Labor and Worker Safety completed an investigation of
Buckeye Electric’s work at the London Correctional/Residential Treatment Center
and found that once again Buckeye Electric had underpaid workers, this time at
least 17 workers on that job were underpaid.
|
In the 1980s, the Ohio state Supreme Court allowed
criminal charges to be filed against Buckeye Electric Company for failing to
pay prevailing wage. |
Not only did Buckeye Electric once face criminal charges over wage violations
in Butler County, Ohio, the State of Ohio has also found that Buckeye Electric
failed to pay the legally required wages on numerous jobs (as indicated with the
list to the left on this page).
Here are some details about Buckeye Electric’s latest wage law
violation.
Wright State University Withholds Final Payment From Buckeye Electric:
Buckeye Payroll irregularities Uncovered
On October 25, 2000, John M. Forman Project Manager for Wright State
University wrote a letter to Buckeye Electric Company, Inc. regarding the
company’s work at Allyn Hall Phase I and the West Entry Improvement project. He
stated that a complaint had been filed against Buckeye Electric with Ohio State
Wage and Hour Bureau. "Until the matter is resolved, I will be withholding your
final payment for Allyn Hall Phase I," Mr. Forman’s letter concluded.
The complaint to the State of Ohio questioned the failure of Buckeye to
explain several deductions form workers’ pay, questions about payment of
vacation and holiday pay, and the handling of apprenticeship training
deductions.
On June 4, 2001, the Ohio Department of Commerce Wage and Hour Bureau, issued
its finding. Buckeye Electric had in fact underpaid almost $1,700 in wages on
the Allyn Hall project.
The State of Ohio found
